Story goes, Florida is known for turnips. Let’s be clear, this is the Florida located in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. The turnips are so legendary that they had their own Florida Turnip Festival which ran from 1972 to 1984 and made a delightful return in 2010. And according to locals, the festival included a Turnip King and Queen.

Berkshire locals brag that Florida turnips also known as rutabaga are legendary for their massive size and sweetness which is attributed to the French-Canadian seed connection. Something about the growing conditions being alike that produces sweet and big turnips. A local friend’s Thanksgiving always includes the famed turnips. Tried it and they were BERKalicious!

Other attractions in Florida include the Hoosac Tunnel railway which runs about five miles to the West in North Adams. To learn more about the Hoosac Tunnel, visit the Western Gateway Heritage State Park on your trip to the Berkshire.

For spectacular views, make a trail stop at the Whitcomb Summit Retreat located on the Mohawk Trail where you’ll also discover The Elk On The Trail, a WWI memorial for locals who died in the war.
